If I am able to combine breakfast with chocolate and make it freakishly healthy, you better believe I’ll do it! This is one of my favorite morning go-to’s, and it’s a variation on the “bulletproof coffee” you may have heard of. It’s a quick, easy, healthy and de-lish morning ritual that gives me enough fuel to last until lunch time.
We’ve all heard little bits and pieces of the, “is chocolate healthy?” conversation. If you’re anything like me, you always thought it sounded to good to be true and continued to eat your chocolate in guilt-infused binges following long periods of self restrain, which somehow always end while waiting in line at a convenience store. (What else is there to do at convenience stores besides get the main thing you went there for, and then also get a bar of chocolate? )
After coming to the conclusion that this is no way to live, I did some further investigating to see if there’s any way I can keep my hankering for chocolate without involving the guilt factor. Well, I now eat more chocolate every day than I ever have before – and I feel great!
Cacao: The superfood at a glance:
Raw cocoa powder is simply the cocoa bean ground down into a powder, and it’s the purest form of chocolate. Full of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, it’s been used medicinally for thousands of years in different cultures around the world, and is great for the heart, blood, and brain. It boasts a myriad of health benefits such as reducing blood pressure, protecting cardiac health, and helping you think better. Raw cacao powder is not the same as cocoa powder, which has been processed and has had some health benefits cooked away in the roasting process. Regular chocolate bars do have antioxidants, but the health benefits are cancelled out by the high levels of sugar and saturated fats.
What is this “bulletproof” talk all about, and why would you put butter in hot chocolate??!
Did you know that butter can be healthy too? Grass-fed butter is full of the good fats that our body needs, is rich in vitamin K, and can help regulate cholesterol levels. The more yellowy-orange grass-fed butter is, the higher levels of vitamin K it contains. The butter combined with MCT oil first thing in the morning provides your brain and body with lots of fuel, and gets your metabolism ready to burn fat all day long.
Bulletproof Hot Cocoa Recipe
The list of goodies:
- One tablespoon of of grass-fed butter (Kerrygold is my favorite!)
- A tablespoon of MCT oil (coconut oil can substitute, but definitely get your hands on some MCT oil!)
- One tablespoon of raw cocoa powder
- A few drops/pinch of stevia to sweeten (DON’T use sugar or artificial sweeteners, that defeats the whole healthy purpose)
- Cinnamon, vanilla or pumpkin pie spice blend, (optional)
- Pinch of Himalayan pink salt
- Splash of coconut milk
- 1-2 cups of hot water
How I did it:
- Toss a cup of hot water in the blender with butter, MCT oil, raw cacao powder, stevia, salt and spice.
- Blend for about 30 seconds on high speed.
- Pour in your cup, top off your cup with hot water, and enjoy!
And there you have it!
