A Natural Breath Mint
The most obvious way to use peppermint oil is as a natural breath freshener. Peppermint oil is powerful, and it not only clears the sinuses but gives you fresh breath that lasts. The reason why it lasts longer than breath mints, is because peppermint oil actually kills bacteria and germs in your mouth. Breath mints and gum only cover up odor and do not actually kill the bacteria that causes bad breath in the first place. Not to mention, gum and mints also contain sugar or aspartame (even worse!) which obviously do not contribute to good oral health.
Natural Stomach Ache Remedy
Peppermint oil is SO cleansing and healing for the digestive system. If you have a stomach ache, nausea, constipation or indigestion, peppermint oil can help you to feel better very quickly.
Natural Headache remedy
Peppermint creates a deep a cooling sensation which can feel very soothing for a tension headache. Simply put a drop of peppermint oil on a finger and rub it behind the neck or on the temples. I don’t get headaches very often, but when I have one I am always glad I have peppermint oil on hand!
I like to put one drop of peppermint oil in a big glass of water and drink it first thing in the morning. The powerful cooling sensation clears the senses and wakes me up fast! Plus, as mentioned above peppermint oil is very supportive to the digestive system, so consuming it on an empty stomach gives it a chance to work it’s magic without being diluted by food you’ve consumed.
Natural Sore Throat Remedy
Whenever I get sick, it usually begins with a tiny little scratchy sore throat that gets worse and worse until I am full-blown sick. I’ve found that if take action at the first sign of being sick and I take a drop of peppermint oil and hold it at the back of my throat, it kills off any bacteria that was making me feel bad.
Peppermint Oil in Cooking
As if the health benefits listed above weren’t good enough, you can also incorporate peppermint oil into your life in the kitchen. My peppermint/chocolate covered pretzels are always a hit, and so are peppermint brownies. Put a drop of peppermint in your hot cocoa to make a peppermint cocoa latte. Note that not all brands of essential oils are safe to consume, but pure, therapeutic grade essential oils are safe to consume and will indicate so on the label.
Where I get it
Essential oils are becoming more popular, and there are many brands on the market right now. I used to purchase my oils from Whole Foods Market, but since then I’ve learned a lot about aromatherapy and essential oils, and I realize that not all essential oils are created equal. Now Doterra is the brand I chose to get my essential oils from, and I use their oils every single day. If you’d like to try some oils yourself, I’d be happy to help you get access to a wholesale account so you can get your oils at a cheaper price.
Do you use essential oils? What is your favorite, and what do you use them for? I’d love to hear in your comments below!
